How to get proper focus with your camera

How to get focus with a DSLR

Focus is everything in video. Recently, some students came back from a video shoot and showed me the footage and it was useless because it was out of focus. In larger budget productions they hire focus pullers or called 1st AC.  Most of the time I film myself, even when I get some help from my daughters.  In this short tutorial I show you how I get my camera in focus.

I have a really basic home studio basement set up and I use a Canon 7D when I am not using my iPhone 5S. I use Dracast lights and the RØDE smart lav for audio.  What’s your challenge when you film  yourself?  Share in the comments below.

  1. Chip, focus is important in a couple of ways. You have to focus on what you’re saying, and the camera must be focused. If your message or image are ever out of focus, your video is in trouble. I like your set up.
